theme: THE FAILURE OF RELIGION
Text: Romans 2:17 and 3:4
2:17 Behold, you have the name "Jew" and rely on the law and boast in God,
2:18 and know his will and directed by approve the law better,
2:19 and trust that you guide the blind, light to those who are in darkness,
2:20 Instructor foolish, a teacher of babes, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth.
2:21 You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that not steal, do you steal?
2:22 You who say you do not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?
2:23 You who boast in the law, is in violation of the law dishonor God?
2:24 Because it is written, the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.
2:25 For indeed circumcision avails, if you observe the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision.
2:26 If therefore the uncircumcision keep the ordinances of the law, will not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision?
2:27 And who is physically uncircumcised but keeps fulfill the law, judge thee, who by the letter of the law and circumcision are a transgressor of the law.
2:28 For it is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision which is outward in the flesh;
2:29 it is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, in spirit, not letter, whose praise is not from men, but God.
3:1 What advantage then hath the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision?
3:2 Much every way. First of all, that they were entrusted with the Word of God.
3:3 For what if some of them did not believe? Does your unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God?
3:4 By no means, but rather let God be true and every man a liar, as it is written
that thou mayest be justified in thy words,
And may overcome when thou art judged.
purpose that the disciples continue to True God and discard the empty religiosity.
Background: All human beings are religious. The religion is the belief that rules and traditions to life.
Religion has failed because:
1. vv.17-24. The rules or laws do not give life.
a. Produce pride. B.
Produce false security. C.
Lead us to failure.
II. vv 25-27. The tradition of circumcision is ineffective to live the pact.
a. God's commandments can be made tradition. B.
The traditions may void the commandments of God. C.
Tradition is not necessary to obey God.
III. V. 28 -3 to 4. Only the work of God changes a person.
a. Interior is a work that manifests itself in exterior will
b. In the heart, not in the flesh. C.
In the Spirit not in the letter.
conclusion
Religion has failed to save or transform man. Only God can save a condemned man, dead, unable to please Him in anything. God is faithful to give us the gospel is true because we do not lie. Only by FAITH in Jesus Christ upon the cross of Calvary, his resurrection, ascension into heaven, sending His Holy Spirit we can approach God and be transformed by His grace and power.
